The Curse of the Remake

 Has Writing died?

I will start by saying I am not a fan of remaking films, or rewriting stories. That said, I do give the remakes a honest chance, Poirot is a case of a good remake.

I was watching an excerpt from the 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts, when my suggested we watch the movie as we both enjoyed it. I tracked the title on YouTube, and came up with the 2000 remake.

From here, I had few expectations, and I was not disappointed. Dennis Hopper is great as Pelias the evil usurper of the crown; and David Calder is an excellent replacement for Laurence Naismith as Argo, designer of the boat.

I admit, I am biased, no lady can better Honor Blackman as Hera, Ms Blackman is one of my favourite actresses.

The essence of any story is belief, disregarding my bias, there are flaws in the remake; the main one being the actor playing Jason. He is tasked with forming a crew to search for the Golden Fleece, only the most desperate of men would follow a boy who looks more apt to be a ten heartthrob than a sailor. From this point - 5 minutes in - I lost interest.

A good remake is Clash of the Titans, I must admit, I was not looking forward to this remake, how could you better a cast that included Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, and Claire Bloom? The drawbacks to the original film are Ursula Andres, who got her role as she is blonde, blue-eyed, and well built, as an actress she can't act her way out of a paper bag, and her boyfriend at the time, Harry Hamlin. I have to admit, I enjoyed the remake a lot despite it having so much to live up to.
