The Enduring Mystery
One of the most enigmatic puzzles of the seas, to most people, is the case of the Marie Celeste.
For as long as I have known about the mystery, I have held the same view.
The mystery to me is what was in the hold?
If the captain hit a storm during the journey, and was carrying casks of alcohol, he may have feared there would be an explosion below decks, and ordered the crew, and passengers off.
If they left in a rush, they would have taken only the most meagre essentials, the North Atlantic at the calmest of times is not a nice area to left afloat, and here they were in Mid-December, in a small lifeboat. It would not be too far-fetched to think the passengers either froze to death, or were washed into the seas, and eaten by fish.
The ship was in full sail, even if they were in tatters, so she was capable of staying afloat, even if there had been an explosion.
There are some sea mysteries I cannot explain, such as The Flying Dutchman, or the Ghost Ship which appears off the coast of Norway.
I use the term ghost ship correctly in these cases, as the modern term is a ship found deserted, to my that is not a ghost ship; most of these vessels are found in the South China Seas, an area to this day, ahaunt for piracy.
To me, a gost ship is an apparition; there is one exception. In the late 1980s, a ship sent out a distress call, saying they had a virus which was killing the crew, The rescue team was sent out, what they found was a dead crew, who had died in distress, the mystery is despite a thorough search lasting a week, no pathogens, or chemical leaks were found, and the scientist have no answer to what killed the crew.
