Alan Place - Blog Guest

 What made my posts interesting?

About me
Several years ago, I was a regular guest blogger on sites run by colleagues in writing.
What made me a regualr guest?

My posts were rarely about me, my books, or self-promotion. I tried to vary my posts as much as I could, yes, I did post about things of interest to me, but not often. At one time, I was the main blogger on one site, because I was online most days, and the writer in the group with no contract, so I could be relied on to write at a moments notice, and did often

What drew us together?

 Openess is the charm

Romance in Whitchurch
One of the main things which has kept my relationship with my friend, Clara, going is our openeness to discuss issues.
We found we share many tastes, that is one adavatage of dating a mature lady. We ave had our rough patches, mainly because I was unsure of my position in the friendship until this week.
From the outset, we have been open about what we'd like in our romance, some men could see a lady in charge as being a threat, to me it's a turn-on, I get aroused seeing the lady I love being aroused.
There is no better way to arouse a lady than make her feel safe, and comfortable, which is why I never lead a discussion online to sex. If the lady wished to chat about it, that is her choice

Fallout

Ladies in Uniform

Ladies in the USA
I won't deny I am attracted to a lady in a uniform, the uniform adds to the appeal, but the lady is more of interest to me than her uniform.
Recently, several ladies in the Armed Forces of the USA have been chatting to me on WhatsApp, once they find I am not interested in marriage, their interest falls off. It isn't that I don't find them attractive, it is that I am old enough to be their father

What music do i play for stress relief?

 The cult of Personality

Classical Music
As I have grown older, the music I use for stress relief has changed radically. Whereas years ago, I would blast out either Alice Cooper, or Motorhead, now I calm down with Tchaikovsky piano concerto no 1.
There are several versions on YouTube I listen to, while I admit to being a fan of the piece, I have no female pianist I enjoy watching more than any other playing it.
What I enjoy is the sweeping piano opening,  the chords remind me of the sea in a storm, with the wind in my face

What would be my perfect day?

 My vacation list

A walk on the wild side

Most people have a list of places they would like to visit, I am no exception, though my list has changed, mainly for health issues.

My list has changed radically.

I used to wish to visit Israel, mainly to see Massada, not for religious reasons, I am interested in the fort as I am interested in military history. I have crossed Isreal off my list recently.

India has always been on my list, my father served there in 1948, at the time of the partition which formed Pakistan.

I am not bothered that I have lost track of the location of my passport, there are so many places in the UK I would like to see.

Not far from where I live in Hartcliffe, Bristol, is the Avebury stone circle, a venue my late wife always wished to see. There are several stone circles in this area worth a visit. I have always wished to revisit Slimbridge, but without a car, it is almost impossible. The best time to visit is in October, when the swans return for the winter.

I have wished to visit both Warwick and Worcester for years.

There are some places I wish NOT to visit again, such as Bath, Stonehenge, and Swindon.

My ideal day, would be walking in the woods with the lady I love, and feeling the wind in my face. For many reasons, I am not a beach person, I would rather visit a museum, even though I worked in them for 15 years, than spend a day on the beach. Don't get me wrong, I love to walk on the beach, but I couldn't spend the day there.

Ladies in the USA

Several requests to form a relationship

What is it about me?
In the past several months, I have had several ladies requesting me to start a relationship.
For various reasons I declined them, mostly because the ladies are young enough to be my daughter, while that would be a turn-on for some men, it is not for me.
I prefer my lady to be close to my age, so we can share a truer sense of love.
Of the dozens who asked me, fewer than 10% were close to my age.

One young lady in Atlanta made me laugh.
I had told her my ankle was sore as the tendon tore decades ago, and because of a medical condition, even a simple operation was not on the cards for me. I had stated I am a disabled pensioner with little money, her reply would have been comical, if it wasn't so stupid. She said, "You know you can fly to India to get your ankle seen to."
If I told doctors here the operation was intenable, why would I fly to India?
I would love to have been able to visit India,  the state has a fascinating history.

A steady relationship

 Clara - my love

A rocky start
After what can only be described as a tumultous beginnging, my friend, Clara, and I, are now in a more established relationship. Most of the bad start is my fault, as I went to the wrong area of Bristol hoping to meet her. I used to go to Redcliffe, when she lives not far from me, in Whitchurch, a short walk from Hartcliffe. Going to Redcliffe, I was heading in the wrong direction.

Our recent upsets were because Clara wished to be certain how she felt, before commiting to seeing me. My concerns were that she didn't wish to meet, but didn't wish to ruin our friendship by saying so.
We settled our worries, and now look forward to a pleasant romance

Does a mature lady friend qualify for a girlfriend?

 Clara - my love

Romance in Whitchurch
I have a mature lady friend who is in her 50's, I find it difficult to say she is my girlfriend.
At what age does the term girlfriend end, or does it?
Technically, ladies of all ages could qualify as girlfriends.

Is there an age of beauty?

 In Praise of Older Women

50+ ladies in the Bristol area
I do not have an age issue with ladies, though I prefer them to be 15 years either side of my age. If you are younger than that, I am old enough to be your father. While some men find that an attraction, it is creepy to me, then, I am old-fashioned.
The opposite works for older ladies, if I am more than 15 years younger, I could be your son, again, to some that is an attraction, not to me.
I see on Twitter, posts saying "Would have sex with me, I'm in my 60's?"
Age is not important to me, if I consider you attractive, the answer is yes

Why do McDonald's give so many free gifts?

 Worst Food

Burger King
I have tasted foods from several countries ranging from China, Mexico, Chile, and the Netherlands.
While food in the Netherlands can be bland, with only the spices giving it flavour, I can say, without a doubt in my mind, the worst food I have had is McDonald's. Without exception, the food is tasteless, even when doused in tomato sauce, which is why when I wish for a burger, I choose Burger King

Romance in Frostpunk?

 From Tropico to Frostpunk

Is there hope?
If my romance with a lady in Bristol isn't quite as barren and hopeless as Frostpunk, the Arctic Survival game, it is certainly a long way from the delights of Tropico I thought we had, when I thought our friendship could develop into a romance.
Though I still hope for progress, that hope is becoming tenuous

Would I consider sex with a Transgender lady?

 Sexual Requests

Why not?
Several weeks ago, I got a request for sex from an attractive Transgender lady, in Bristol. As I considered her attractive, I seriously considered her request, but I turned it down as I hoped a friendship with another lady would develop into a romance, months later, I am still waiting

What am I looking for?

How do you define a Relationship?

A lasting friendship
I often have the same discussion with a lady in Bristol.
We have VERY different definitions of what constitutes a relationship.
She says, she thinks we ARE in a relationship, my argument is how can we be in a relationship, when not only have we not met, but you keep cancelling our dates?
The only relationship I would say we ARE in is a business agreement, that is not even close to a friendship this month.

In my concept of a romantic relationship, two people meet to get slowly get to know, understand, relate, and hopefully turn friendship into a love. That is not how I see my friendship with the lady.
What I was seeking is a lasting friendship which, hopefully, turned into a romance. We started out like that, over the months, the friendship has turned into a business stance, I was not after that. If things don't change soon, I will end our friendship, and move on

How things can change

Would I make love to a Transexual lady

Sexual Requests
Several weeks ago, an attractive young lady in Bristol asked me if I was interested in having a sexual relationship with her?
I politely declined, not because she is a transexual, at the time, I thought my friendship with another lady in Bristol would develop into a relationship, however, time proved me wrong. Months later, the friendship is turning sour for me, as she keeps cancelling dates with me, and I am running out of patience

Sexual Requests

 Should I save myself?

A wanted man
For the next month I shall remain an exclusive friend to a lady called Clara, who "claims" to live nr me, and loves me, this may change soon though.
In the past few months, I have been offered close friendships with several ladies in the Bristol area, so far, I have kept them as no more than online friends, that will change if Clara and I don't meet soon.
After 13 cancelled dates, I am not sure if Clara wishes to meet, but is shy, or if she never had the intention of meeting, and was playing me to get money.

I don't know what to think

 24 hours later

                                                     Romance in Whitchurch?

I am lost for words. We'd planned our 13th (possible) meeting days ago, and again, Clara didn't arrive. What makes it more annoying is I said I would be in Whitchurch on Monday, and she pleaded (again) for me to go earlier, as she said she wanted to meet me sooner.
Part of me wants to believe her, but that part is losing the war with my mind, which keeps saying, "If she wants you so badly, why is she stalling?"
The other section is saying, "Give her up, she has proved she isn't interested, and is probably a scammer."
Yesterday's failed meeting was one I thought of cancelling as I saw some omens of ill will in my dreams.
A story I began years ago, suddenly came to mind, from nowhere. What was scary is the name of the spaceship was Empire's Wrath, but a rust stain changed Wrath into Wraith.
After that, I was reminded that it was Friday, and this would have been our 13th attempted meeting. Clara laughed it off with "Perhaps the 13th will be lucky for us."

Shopping in Whitchurch

 Is Clara in Bristol?

I am not good for any lady
Though my "friend" who claims to live in Whitchurch, Bristol, not far from Asda, keeps finding excuses not to meet, despite saying she is keen to meet, and loves me deeply, this won't stop me going to her area.
I like using Asda, as it has a good variety of foods for my expanding cookery book

The Omens were there

 Friday the 13th

Do you believe in Omens?
At the back of my mind, I had the feeling today would go sour, from the weird dream featuring the name Wraith, to today being a Friday, and the 13th time Clara, and I had arranged to meet, and still have not met. I was so close to cancelling our meeting, I wish I had now.
For months, I've had my doubts about Clara, first she said she was in Filwood Park, when I commented I can walk there, she changed her address to Woolland Lane, two miles in another direction.
If she lives in Woolland Lane, she is only a 10-minute drive from meeting me at Asda, Whitchurch, yet she cannot do that for me, when I have to walk 2 miles to the store because the bus service is so awkward.
I don't want to think she is a SCAMMER, but things she does, do not add up

I am not good for any lady

 On the trash heap

                                   Fighting the three D's

For the last three months, I have had a mental struggle against the three D's.
Each time I returned from Whitchurch, Bristol, after going to meet a lady who claimed to love me, a part of me died, or became poisoned.
Today was the day, I lost the battle.
I've been Devoted to keeping the "relationship," her term, not mine, alive.
I was Desperate to know if a lady could love me.
Now, i accept I'm Delusional, no lady would want me, and I'm fine with that now I've stepped back.

Fighting the Dragon
I have given up fighting the urge to drown my sorrows with Vodka, one day soon, I'll open the bottle of Dragon Vodka i have.
After all, who cares, not I.

So many sites - so few sales

 Why Bother?

                                                                    Too little and too late

Each week, I get emails from publishers asking if I am interested in seeing my eBook sales multiply?
Most of them have no status, they are a few people "claiming" to help boost sales, when they are really after getting me to pay for their services, I did get one genuine offer, sadly, the price was more than I can justify spending.

Fighting my Demons

 The Chronicles of Mark Johnson

                                               Alan's Demons

I often get asked, is your character Mark Johnson based on you?
Yes, he is, many of the ideas in the The Chronicles of Mark Johnson are based on my views.
In the later stories, the witchhunt comes from my reaction to a friendhsip I had with a lady in Ipswich at the time.
I have been asked, several times, could I rewrite the stories? No, I am not in the same mindspace now, I have gone back to my favourite genre - Gothic

Do you believe in Omens?

Friday the 13th

Siggy Buckley
This morning, I had a strange dream, what made it strange?
The dream was about a story I began, but never got far with called The Empire's Wrath, but the painters didn't realise as they painted Wrath (meaning anger), between the A & T was a rust stain that looked like an I, turning Wrath into Wraith (angry spirit), or did they see it?
I hadn't thought of the story for so long, I can't recall the last time.
My friend Siggy Buckley published it on her website. From her name, and appearance, you can tell she isn't Irish, her family left Berlin at the start of Adolf Hitler's rise to power.

Why is today Friday the 13th for me?
Today is Friday, and it will be the 13th arranged date with my friend Clara, who lives in Whitchurch, Bristol, this time I hope she turns up

Community Care

 Hartcliffe

Horfield
One of the things which hit me about living in Hartcliffe, Bristol, is that despite its bad reputation, caused by the media, the area is a considerate community.
Several times during my walks over the nine years we lived here, I was asked if I needed help as I am disabled, and need to take a rest now and again.
We lived in Horfield for 30 years, and people there would not raise a finger to help, even if they saw you bleeding to death, Horfield was built as somewhere between places, not as a community

My Golden Year

Alan Place - A Writer in time

Alan Place - Award Winning Author
2012 was my Golden Year. That year, I earned two awards for my writing ability, one from an organisation in the USA, and the other from a writing contest on Facebook.
I am sure other writers felt the same, 2012 was the year of the Mayan Calendar, many writers wrote stories about the end of the world. I opften wonder what happened to them after that? But, if you made a lot of money that year, what followed is not important.
I wonder if any got a writing contract after that year?
All those books about 2012 are gathering dust on the shelves, but if they made you money, or earned a contract, I guess you don't care.
I was offered a contrct in 2012, but I turned it down as the publisher didn't care what I wrote as long as it was legal.
For years after that, I wondered did I do the correct thing, as that was the only offer I was offered in my 15 years as a writer?
Some writers I knew said, "If you're asking the question, you know the answer."
It didn't matter in the end, for some reason the publisher went out of business soon after

The North Wind

 Here I go again

                                                Romance in Whitchurch?

My friend who "claims" to live in Whitchurch, Bristol, and "claims" to wish to meet me, is probably wondering if I will repeat what I did on Tuesday, when she failed to turn up to our scheduled meeting.
Tomorrow, we plan to meet at her request, as I suggested Monday, and she said she couldn't wait that long.
My reaction if she doesn't arrive, I am expecting to return having not met her, will be the opposite of Tuesday. On Tuesday, I went volcanic, as I cared for her, and felt she didn't care for me. Tomorrow's reaction will be the opposite, cold indifference after 12 meetings cancelled.

In a strange mindset, I was thinking of the fable of the Northwind.
This is the story of a challenge between the Northwind, and Southwind as to who can get people to put less on.
The Northwind blew hard, and the people wrapped up as the wind was cold from the Arctic Ocean. When the Southwind blew gently, people took off their coats as the wind travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, and the warmer Caribbean Sea.
I wish for my friend to turn up, but I doubt she will, Que Sera.

Does earning an award mean anything?

Alan Place -  Award Winning Author

Only Major Awards count
In 2012, when I earned two awards, I was in contact with several award-winning writers, in various countries, and we came to the conclusion, unless you win an award of the calibre of either the Orange Award, The Booker Prize, or the Times Literary Award, no award has any meaning.
I can't vouch for anyone else, my award did NOTHING for me

The Long Goodbye

 24 hours

Here I go again
Here is go again, this time tomorrow I'll be setting off to hopefully meet my friend,Clara, in WhitchurchBristol.
This time things WILL be different. If she doesn't go to our meeting, which is what I am expecting, she'll get a reaction from me that will shock her.
I'm not going to go on the rampage as I did on Tuesday, I will do the opposite, I'll adopt an attitude of indifference, this will be the 12th time we've arranged a meeting, and all have been cancelled.
The Exclusive she has on my attention will be gone.

I had a Sugar mommy

 A Possible Scam

Lac La Biche
I keep seeing ladies on Twitter offering to be a Sugar Mommy, a lady who send money to people, for being there for them.
In 2010, I had the opportunoty of having a sugar mommy, when an older lady paid for my two visits to see her in Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada, where I took the photo above.
As a rule, II never contact these ladies, I don't like giving bank details to people I don't know, and I don't use PayPal, or CashApp

Ant & Dec

 Santander

                                       Defund the BBC

Young viewers don't realise Ant & Dec represent the BBC, and have done for over 30 years.

They began back in the day with Byker Grove, and have been ever present since then.I can't think of a better reason to Defund the BBC.

For the past four years, I have considered leaving Santander, why, they are paying A&D too.It isn't only that they get so much that turns me off, it is their puerile attempt at humour.

The lure of the Dragon

 Romance in Whitchurch

Fighting the Dragon
For several months, as my meetings with my friend, Clara, in Whitchurch, Bristol, never happened, I had the urge to drown my despair with some Dragon Vodka I have in the house.
Though we still haven't met, I have no desire to partake in the Vodka, parially because of the risk of losing my friend's respect, though she was my support at my lowest, but also, I have never been a big alcohol drinker, I don't object to a short now and again, but I am more likely to drink fruit tea these days.
Another concern is if I start to drink alcohol, my friend may change her mind about me, and decide she doesn't wish to meet, that would serve one purpose, to drive me to drink

My Addiction

 Apple Pie Addiction

Health Foods
I have a serious addiction issue, I love apple pies. It was wonderful at our old house, we had been there long enough (30 years), to have grown several fruit trees.
We had apple, plums, peach trees, that is the only thing I miss about living in Horfield, our life there was a living hell

Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

 Netflix

                                                                     Old Cartoons

Last night, I found I had misplaced one of my favourite cartoon series, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Though my friend in Whitchurch and I had a disagreement last night,I thought he parted on good terms, or so I thought. Our last chat was about old fashioned cartoons, such as Top Cat. I refer the older cartoon to the modern series on Netflix.
I know I wouldn't have sold the series on eBay, as the collection is one of my favourite collections

24 hours later

 Will we meet?

                                                                      24 hours

It is a day since my friend, Clara, and I agreed to have our meeting. A meeting which never materialised.
Last night, we had a heated debate about where I stand in her life. I admit to getting "pushy" at times, as I explained, this is because I am not sure where, if anywhere, I figure in her life?
She keeps telling me I am "her man," and she wishes to consider me her exclusive lover. I have agreed not to chat to other ladies online, though I have had many requests, and the more times we Clara and I fail to meet, the harder is for me to consider myself as being her exclusive friend.
Though we had a heated debate, I thought we parted on friendly terms, so far today, Clara has not said good morning, this could be as she has internet issues.

Will we meet?

Are we doomed not to meet?

Romance in Whitchurch
Today, I was expecting to meet my attractive friend, Clara, who lives in Whitchurch, Bristol, a short walk from where I live in Hartcliffe. However, as before, things didn't go to plan, and we have still to meet, though we chat each day on WhatsApp.
This is the 12th time our arranged dates have been stalled, and despite Clara saying we will meet, I am having my doubts

The cult of Personality

 Classical Music

                                                Reading list

To some extent, most of us are involved in the cult of personality, myself included, whether it is in music, films, or reading, we all have our favourites.
Some listen to their favourite performers, others will listen to their favoutite pice of music, no matter who plays it. One of my favourite pieces of music is Der Wanderer  by Franz Schubert. This piece has an emotional attachment for me, it was one of the first pieces of classical music bought for me, by a late aunt, I enjoy the piece, no matter who plays it.
I also like music by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev,Shostakovich, Bizet, Weber, and Brahms to mention a few of my favourite composers. I am not ra fan of Mozart or Beethoven. Though I do enjoy some of their works.

Martha Argerich

 Classical Music

In Praise of Older Women
I realise it is a matter of opinion, but in my opinion, Martha Argerich is one of the best examples of how to age with grace, this year she is 81, and in my opinion still very attractive.
It is strange how one person's appearance can turn you off, I began watching one of her performances on YouTube, and swiched off within seconds, the reason is one man from Asia had dyed his hair bright orange to gain attention.
My taste in Classical Music covers many styles, I like to listen to various piano pieces, while some of the ladies may be good pianists, their clothing stops me from watching them, being nicely dressed is one thing, being overtly sexual is another

A vote for Reform UK is a vote against working people

 Vote Restore Britain

                                                         Nigel "The Weasel" Farage

The latest desperate ploy by Nigel Farage, to get into a political party with influence, is to try to join Restore Britain, set up by Rupert Lowe.

Before you get the flags waving for the "weasel," remember this. He is a THREE-time loser, who only got into parliament by sitting for a seat nobody wanted. He told Rupert to either shut up, and follow the regime of HIS party, Reform UK, or leave the party. Now, his last desperate roll of the dice has failed (again), he is trying to join the growing party.

As I said before, Reform UK grew purely out of disaffected members of the Labour Party, they didn't grow, they absored rejects

Tropico 7

 My birthday present

Return to Tropico
My birthday is a long way off, October, this gives me time to save for the latest in the Tropico series of PC Games, a series I have enjoyed, with the exception of Tropico 2, which I never got used to playing, and Tropico 6, which I never got to buying, since its beginning

What appeals to me?

 Personality over Glamour

Glamour is the attraction
In Praise of Older Women
If glamour is the attraction, personality is the magnet that bonds the relationship of two people.
I may have been drawn to my friend, Clara, in Whitchurch, Bristol for her looks, it is her personality which is keeping us together. We bonded closer through shared loss last month. I have been approached on Signal, Telegram, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Zangi by ladies asking for a date, but none wish to know me, as Clara does. Most are after money, as soon as they find I am disabled, and a pensioner, they drop me, but Clara and I have bonded closer with this knowledge.
I am 12 years older than Clara, this doesn't bother her, whereas most of the ladies who contacted me are younger than my daughters

24 hours

 Clara - my love

Romance in Whitchurch
By this time tomorrow, I will know if my relationship with my friend, Clara, in Whitchurch, Bristol, is ongoing, or on the rocks. We click well during our chatting on WhatsApp, as yet we have not met in person, we did share a video message a few days ago.
If we don't meet, I have told Clara, I will start a weekly meeting, which has a limited run, before ending our friendship. I love her deeply, but I am not holding on forever, for something which may not happen, if our relationshio ends, I am not seeking another.  This has nothing to do with Claraa I made that decision when my wife passed away

How did the idea begin?

                  Rhodesia

                                           Akuji

My short story. Manhunt, began as an extension to the story Akuji which is included in the story, set in Rhodesia.
The story behind Akuji goes back to the early days of Playstation, as Akuji was one of my favourite ganes of the era.
Manhunt mixes modern crime with negro spiritualism, in the hunt for an escaped prisoner, does he get recaptured? That would be telling

Do you believe in Spiritualism?

 Spiritualism

I know there are fakes
Spritualism, like ghosts, is something I believe in, though I have no definite proof, nor have I witnessed a ghost. On the other hand, nobody has proved to me, that spirits do NOT exist.
Many people I used to know accredit the popularity of my ghost stories to my belief in the afterlife.
I appreciate their are fakes such as Helen Duncan, but though she was later proved to be a fraud, that can't explain how she knew the moment HMS Barham sank, when the only people the Ministry of Defence informed were the relatives of the dead.
An often asked question is why do the ghosts of airmen vanish into hedges around old air force bases, the answer is that when they left, the area was the main gate to the airfield.
A popular myth is that of The Flying Dutchman, to this day, there is no definitive explantion of why he appears, but there is no doubt he does. Respected Royal Navy officers, and even a future king of England have seen him.
A modern ghost ship is the story of the SS Waratah, she was a ship which vanished after rounding Cape of Good Hope on her return to the UK.
She had been on four previous voyages without incident, however, on her fateful voyage, crew members remarked she was unsteady and top heavy. On her return, one passenger had a dream of seeing an arm rise from the water holding a lank with the wording W R T H on. He cnacelled his voyage, the ship left the next day, and was not seen again.
A loud explosion was heard later that day, followed by a bright, blue flash. It is my view the explosion was the result of the hot boilers coming into contact with the icy waters of the south Atlantic Ocean
I have witnessed the effect of a hot boiler coming in contact with cold air.
                                Why was no wreckage found?
The explosion was contained by the hull of the ship, the wreck was located by a diving crew from Portugal in 2009, the location hasn't been disclosed to protect ppl from diving on her, as she is apparently on a ledge

Wartime Mysteries

 Helen Duncan

                                                                   Spiritualism

In 1941, Scottish meduim Helen Duncan created a mystery which has not been solved to this day.
She said she had a message from a dead sailor aboard HMS Barham. This caused a panic at the Ministry of Defence, HMS Barham had been sunk in action in the Mediterranean Sea with the loss of over 800 lives, but the MoD had limited the knowledge of the sinking to the families of the dead to protect the morale of the British public, still reeling from the loss of HMS Hood, a few months earlier. She was held as a a German spy, but released when no proof could be shown.
She had previoulsy predicted the loss of HMS Hood, which came as a shock to the public, but not to military experts as the Hood was outdated by 1939 being launched nearly 25 years earier.
Mrs. Duncan was later exposed as a fake medium in the last case of its kind in Scotland, that doesn't answer how she knew of the sinking of the Barham.
HMS Rawalpindi
One thing which puzzled me was why the captain of HMS Rawalpindi was not charged with a war crime? After all, his decision to go against admiraltry orders, and engage the Scharnhorst resulted in the deaths of over 800 men under his command,  in less than 15 minutes. To give a comparison the 2,000 deaths during the Bataan Death March took weeks.
I guess having your son aboard HMS Ark Royal outweighs your crime, but what a out the families who lost their men, where is there justice?
To show the disparity, Rawalpindi was an armed merchant cruiser, a converted passenger ship, she could defend herself from an aircraft attack. Scharnhorst was one of the most powerful ships of the time. Rawalpindi was doomed from the moment the captain disobeyed his orders. That is probably why he attacked, he knew his career was over, and a court martial would bring disgrace to the family.
The irony of the situation is Scharnhorst and Bismark, were responsible for sinking HMS Hood a week earlier, an action which sparked a hunt for the Bismark, the result was the officer of the watch when Bismark was spotted was the son of the captain of the Rawalpindi.
So, we return to Helen Duncan prophesying the sinking of HMS Hood, did she really prophecy the sinking of the most powerful ship in the Royal Navy at the time, or did she say what most people thought, HMS Hood should have been scrapped.
The Rawalpindi incident has a link to my history, my father said that he was aboard the Empress of India, which was being escorted when the Rawalpindi spotted the Scharnhorst. Even before the internet, I knew this was not true, why would a ship bound for India, go via the North Atlantic when the usual route would be to go via the coast of Ireland to join a convoy?
To add to the confusion, there is NO record of a ship called the Empress of India. A few years ago, my late friend, who lived in Seattle, told me her father was in the same convoy as my father had been in.
Years later, my mother cleared the mystery up.
