What defines a ghost ship?

 The Flying Dutchman

The Marie Celeste Enigma
When people talk about Ghost Ships, the first name they mention is the Marie Celeste. This is a classic misnomer, the Marie Celeste is NOT a ghost ship, she is a ship abandoned by by her crew.
The most famous ghost ship is the Flying Dutchman, some people have seen her, even at close quarters, but she has never been found.
In one sense, a modern ghost ship is the Ourang Medan.
Why is she a ghost ship?
She has no record of being built, no record of ownership, no records for her cargo, no crew records, and no manifest of her final cargo. Legally, she is a ghost.
She was found adrift in the South China Sea, the final message sent mentioned the crew dying of poisonous gasses, when she was boarded, the crew were found in a severe state of distress indicating mental torture.
The area she was found in, has a record for smuggling and illegal trade, one theory is she was carrying a lethal substance that no government wanted to admit to. She could have been carrying substances, which when seperated are "relatively" harmless, yet when mixed become fatal. One theory is she was carrying a type of nerve gas
